81 different words. 46 are high-frequency words, 59 are decodable, 4 are non-decodable vocabulary words.
Decodability Criteria: Words in this book are either high-frequency words or are decodable according to the following criteria:
• one letter = one sound (e.g. bed)
• doubled letters = one sound (e.g. kiss)
• word endings er, le, y, ed, ing (e.g. tiger, snuggle, baby, chimed, hiding)
• ck sounds like ‘k’ (e.g. tuck)
• long ‘i’ spellings at the start, in the middle and at the end of words
(e.g. tiger, try)
Decoding Strategy: As well as revising previously taught strategies, the focus of this book is to recognize the long ‘i’ sound in different positions in words. Spelling patterns for the long ‘i’ sound are coded blue to help students notice them. Students will meet these patterns: i (climb, chimed, hiding, tigers, spiders), igh (night, sight, tight, light), y (fly, try, cry), i_e (time, kite, nine, bite). When students meet these blue spelling patterns, remind them they will sound like a long ‘i’.
Students have already met the y at the end of a word sounding like a long ‘e’. In most one-syllable words that end with a y, the y is pronounced as a long ‘i’.
Non-decodable Words: High-frequency words: are, come, down, give, gone, have, head, now, oh, out, please, start, that, the, there, turn, your
