Word-Level Reading Strategies

Decodability Criteria: Words in this book are either high-frequency words or are decodable according to the following criteria:
• one letter = one sound (e.g. cat)
• doubled letters = one sound (e.g. off)
• word endings er, y, ed, ing (e.g. after, windy, shouted, flying)
• short ‘o’ written with an a after a ‘w’ sound (e.g. was)
• short ‘oo’ written oo (e.g. looked)
• long vowel spellings in the middle and at the end of words (e.g. play, rose, right)
• voiced and unvoiced ‘th’ written th (e.g. the, with); ‘sh’ written sh, (e.g. she) ‘ch’ written ch, (e.g. charged), ‘ng’ written n and ng (e.g. flying, sink), ‘x’ written x, ‘kw’ written qu
• ‘ar’ sound written ar and a (e.g. Lara, can’t)
Decoding Strategy: As well as revising previously taught strategies, the focus of this book is to learn that the ‘ar’ sound is commonly written ar and sometimes just a. These spelling patterns for the ‘ar’ sound are coded blue in the text to help students notice them. Students will meet ‘ar’ words spelled ar in the story (Lara, garden, carpet, park, Mark, Barney, started, charged, start, marvellous) and a (path, blast, after, can’t, gasped, laughed)
