Word-Level Reading Strategies

63 different words. 40 are high-frequency words, 49 are decodable and 5 are non-decodable vocabulary words.
Decodability Criteria: Words in this book are either high-frequency words or are decodable according to the
following criteria:
• one letter = one sound (e.g. bag)
• doubled letters = one sound (e.g. fell)
• word endings – ed, y, er (e.g. tripped, easy, butter)
• short ‘o’ written with an a after a ‘w’ sound (e.g. watch)
• long vowel spellings at the start, in the middle and at the end of words (e.g. easy, late, lie)
• ‘th’ sound
• ‘ch’ sound ch and tch (e.g. catch, cherry)
Decoding Strategy: As well as revising previously taught strategies, the focus of this book is to learn to pronounce the ‘ch’ sound in words when it is written ch and tch. These spelling patterns are coded blue to help students notice them. When students come to the blue ch and tch patterns, remind them that they will be pronounced ‘ch’.
