Word-Level Reading Strategies

Total Word Count: (includes Title) 141
87 different words. 61 are high-frequency words, 78 are decodable.

Decodability Criteria: Words in this book are either high-frequency words or are decodable according to the following criteria:
• one letter = one sound (e.g. spun)
• doubled letters = one sound (e.g. class)
• word endings er, y, ed, ing (e.g. other(s), gully, tumbled, running)
• long vowel spellings at the start, in the middle and at the end of words
• the short ‘oo’ sound (e.g. couldn’t), the short ‘o’ written with an a (e.g. what)
• the ‘sh’, ‘ch’, ‘th’ sounds (e.g. bush, catch, they)
• the short ‘u’ sound written in different ways (e.g. Justin, others, blood, aloud)

Decoding Strategy: As well as revising previously taught strategies, the focus of this book is to recognize the short ‘u’ sound in words. Spelling patterns for the short ‘u’ are coded blue to help students notice them. Students will meet these patterns: u (Justin, Buddy, mushrooms, gully, up, jumped, but, crumbled, tumbled, spun, mud, cut, fun, suddenly), o (come, one, someone, covered, Monday), a (aloud). When students meet these blue spelling patterns, remind them that they will sound like a short ‘u’.

Non-decodable Words: High-frequency words: heard, here, minute, one, someone, there, there’s, two, were

Important Vocabulary in Text:

Verbs: hissed, catch up, jumped, crumbled, tumbled, sat, spun, covered, running, looked, get, found, heard, calling, yelled, needed, pull, read, walking
Nouns: bush walk, class, mushrooms, gully, bank, head, mud, blood, bank, fun, night, no one, someone, rope, safety, Monday, school, rule
