You can use the following notes to teach students word-level reading/decoding strategies. More in-depth notes can be downloaded below.

Word-Level Reading Strategies

Total Word Count: (includes Title) 114
64 different words. 52 are high-frequency words, 40 are decodable and 2 are non-decodable vocabulary words.

Decodability Criteria: Words in this book are either high-frequency words or are decodable according to the following criteria:
• one letter = one sound (e.g. but)
• doubled letters = one sound (e.g. ball)
• verbs that have ed and ing suffixes (e.g. waded, pushing)

Decoding Strategy: As well as practising previously learned decoding strategies, this book focuses on recognising and pronouncing the ing and ed suffixes. These suffixes are bolded in the text to help students notice them. You can highlight the ing suffix in words like running, drifting, pushing, catching, going.
You will meet the ed suffix being pronounced in three ways –‘d’ (called, yelled, grinned), ‘t’ (looked) and ‘id’ (started, waded).
If students need help to sound out these words, just tell them the correct pronunciation for the ed suffix. Notes for teaching about the meaning and pronunciation of the ed suffix are available in the full teaching notes below.

Non-decodable Words: High-frequency words: were, the, catch, head, away, started, come, water, out, said, think, someone, pushing, fish, our, know, once, catching, play, here
