Emergent
Levels 1- 6

At the Emergent stage, children show a real interest in environmental print.

They are beginning to demonstrate their understanding of concepts about print, such as matching spoken words with written words and moving left to right when reading.

The Emergent stage features:
• Simple text with a single concept/topic
• Familiar concepts, objects and actions
• Predictable text structures
• Natural oral language patterns
• Close picture/text match
• Ample space between words and lines
• Non-fiction features: labels, bold-faced type, graphic symbols, picture glossaries
