Barbara Freeman is an experienced primary and secondary school teacher,
having taught year ones through to year thirteens.

For more than twenty years she's worked developing literacy programmes for secondary students at Kamo High School, Whangarei and Wellington High School, Wellington.

Recently she trained in Reading Recovery and is now enjoying the opportunity to be 'the ambulance at the top of the cliff' instead of at the bottom! She's also enthusiastically writing teaching guides for the Go For It series of high interest/easy read books for reluctant readers.

The series works well with many of those pupils who claim current available material doesn’t reflect who they are, or what interests them in their daily life experience.

The series contains stories about issues confronting 10 to 15 year olds: peer pressure, violence, romance, friendships, self-esteem, bullying etc all with positive outcomes in dealing with specific life
situations. There are also some sequels and continuing characters with more to come as the series grows.

Authors as esteemed as Fleur Beale, David Hill, John Parker and others are on-going contributors to this developing series.

The text is supported by exciting full colour illustrations. These are aimed at capturing the attention of today’s media savvy pupils. They are the work of dynamic NZ artists and designers whose output can also be found on TV, in music videos and other print and electronic media. Teacher support material is free on-line.

There are currently 24 titles to choose from with more being added regularly. A further 6 are due in January 2008. The series contains both fiction (16 to date) and non-fiction (8 to date). These are pitched at differing levels starting at a reading age of eight years. Interest levels are suggested as being from 10 to 15 years.

And now the first 8 fiction titles are supported with new non-fiction companion magazines which are perfect for both reading mileage and general interest. These new magazines also support some of the recently released second batch of fiction books.

The new magazines include “how to” sections, profiles of relevant famous people, websites to access and are designed to look like a regular “monthly” type publication. These too are a growing series with more to follow.
